1. Understand and apply Gagne's events of instruction to support the phases of learning. Use these as a major framework for planning instruction.
2. When problems occur, use these events as a main framework for diagnosing the problem.
3. Employ the strategies described in Tables 3.2 and 3.3 to implement the events of instruction.
4. Select materials that effectively implement the events of instruction. Either use these materials to supplement your own instructional strategies, or use your own strategies to supplement these materials.
5. Encourage learners to engage in self-instruction. Don't just tell them to take charge of their own learning - teach them how to do it. Follow the guidelines suggested in chapter 7 for teaching thinking skills, and tie those in with the events of self-instruction (Table 3.2).
